What is Washi Tape?
It is a decorative paper masking tape, most commonly used by creatives for scrapbooking, craft, mixed media and bullet journals. Inexpensive, comes in a trillion different designs, patterns, colours and also widths. The tape is adhesive with low tack, meaning you can remove it from certain papers without tearing the fibres.
Where does the name 'Washi' come from?
Back in 2006 in Japan, a masking tape business called
Kamoi Kakoshi Co. had a request from some craft ladies to create a colourful masking tape for their books they were making. They went with rice paper which has a lot more strength than the more common paper, from a wood pulp.
The word "washi" comes from wa meaning 'Japanese' and shi meaning 'paper'. It originally was called MT Washi, with MT standing for Masking Tape but it soon was dropped.
